Past Events



These are some of our past events held from September 2015 to August 2016 to give you a flavor of what the club has on offer.  Many other trips are posted in our Members Only "Five Winds Google Group".  The Google Group provides a way for members to post trips, or post any questions or information to the group similar to a forum but in an email format.

 April 16-17 - Overnight Backpack - Pike Bay
We will backpack in approximately 6-8 km. to set up camp.  We will hike in the afternoon.  Next day, we will continue to explore the area, and then, pack up and back-pack out.  This is a good trip for those new to backpacking or trying out new equipment.

 Apr. 13 - Day Hike - Mount Nemo +/- 12 km.
Terrain is moderate.  Pace:  medium to brisk (4.5 km/hr)

 March 26-28 - Snowshoeing/Winter Camping - Cold Tenting (Haliburton)
We will travel with sleds, sleep in cold tents if temperature will allow, and cook over the open fire at night.  Dress in layers.  Wear boots with removable liners.

 March 19-20 - Snowshoeing/Winter Camping - Hot Tenting (McCrae Lake)
The plan is to come in by snowshoe and sled for around 2-3 km. along trails and frozen ponds, and set up base camp.  3-4 hour snowshoe with a day pack.  We will sleep in the hot tent or tarp shelters.  Next day, a 2-3 hr. snowshoe (about 6 km), pack up and back out.  Cooking over the open fire at night.  Dress in layers.  Wear boots with removable liners.

 February 28 - Winter Bus + One Wilderness Navigation Ski Group + Toronto Bruce Trail Club (snowshoe)
This is an opportunity to gain confidence in wilderness navigation using a Five Winds map, compass, features of nature and a GPS.  Bring a map in a waterproof case (that hangs around your neck or is otherwise easily accessible and a compass.  GPS is optional.
The Toronto Bruce Trail Club will be our guests with one of our Five Winds leader(s) taking the group off-trail and through the backcountry of our Muskoka Wilderness.  The event is organized by the Toronto Bruce Trail Club and registration for the event is made through the Toronto Bruce Trail Association.

The focus will be on lightweight backpacking techniques, so no tents would be the goal.  We'll team up with teams of 2 to 4 and create some tent/snow shelters.  Cooking over the open fire at night.  Dress in layers.  Wear boots with removable liners

 Dec. 27 - Wilderness Navigation Practice (Indoor Session)
Get ready by refreshing your map reading skills and working with a compass.  We will head over to Leslie Street Spit for a walk afterwards.
