Repair broken pole

Skiing or snowshoeing without poles is extremely difficult. If a pole shaft breaks, it can be repaired in the field. Here's one way.

You'll need two hose clamps, and two narrow rods of metal about 6" long, and something to screw the hose clamps like a multi-tool or Swiss Army Knife with a screwdriver.

Open the hose clamps and wrap them around the pole shaft. Fit the metal rods along the shaft and inside the hose clamps. Then tighten the clamps. The result should be rigid splints on both sides of the pole

The best metal rod is the I-beam shaped curtain track, which are inexpensive at a hardware store and easily cut with a hacksaw. They have the advantage of holding the shaft inside the side of the rod more rigidly.
